Some Background On Advent
Here is the meaning of advent for you. Advent means ‘Coming’ in Latin. So Advent is the coming of Jesus into the world.
Our church body as part of the community of Canandaigua churches use the four Sundays and weeks of Advent to prepare and remember the real meaning of Christmas.
We pause to remember the true reason for the season….
Where Did The Tradition Start
Lighting an Advent wreath is a custom that began with Lutherans and Catholics in 16th-century Germany.
Tradition in the Catholic and Lutheran churches has long held onto the tradition of lighting of four candles before christmas day, and then one final a white candle after the birth of Jesus.
These candles are all part of the traditional Advent wreath.
Typically, the Advent wreath is a circle of branches or garland with four or five candles arranged on the wreath.
This Is Our Advent Schedule for 2018
During the season of Advent, one candle on the wreath is lit each Sunday as a part of the Advent services.
- Sunday December 2-The purple candle is the first week’s candle to be lit. It signifies the candle of Hope. This is taken from the prophecy of the birth of Jesus.
- Sunday December 9-Week 2 the candle is also a purple candle. This is often referred to as the Bethlehem or the preparation candle.
- Sunday December 16-This candle is the pink candle. It is known as the candle of joy or some know it as the Shepherd Candle.
- Sunday December 23-The fourth candle a purple candle is also know as the candle of Love or some know it as the Angel Candle.
A fifth week candle is usually placed in the center of the wreath. This candle is a white candle. The white candle is known for being the candle that represents the birth of Jesus. It represents purity, the purity of Jesus.
Christ is the sinless, spotless, pure Savior. He is the light come into a dark and dying world. Also, those who receive Jesus Christ as Savior are washed of their sins and made Clean by the blood of Jesus on the Cross at Calvary.
